Brent crude, the international oil benchmark, surpassed $100 a barrel for the first time since July, as traders reacted to strikes between America and Iran. Iran said it had launched missiles at ten ships and an American base in Jordan in retaliation for American attacks which destroyed five tankers.
Brent crude contracts rose more than $3 around midday Wednesday, as a fresh wave of military strikes between U.S. and Iran and fears over prolonged Strait of Hormuz closure sent the international oil benchmark above $100/bbl for the first time since July.
Brent crude punched through $100 a barrel on Wednesday morning, hours after U.S. forces struck oil tankers linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps operating near the Strait of Hormuz. It is the first time the global benchmark has held that level since the brief late-July spike that pushed Brent to $105.
